LESSONS FROM CHAPTER 34

It was my birthday a couple of days ago and I turned 34. As I’ve been doing a lot of journaling lately while still in keeping with an introspective approach, I thought it’d be nice to share some key lessons I’ve learnt so far hence the title of the post – lessons from chapter 34. My Instagram post on Sunday pretty much summarised how I’ve arrived at this juncture. It read;

This is Chapter 34. It’s my birthday today and I’m feeling particularly grateful. Exactly on this day 12 years ago (on my 22nd birthday) I caught a flight that would mark my move to the UK. In my iPod was Lighthouse Family and Tracy Chapman’s albums. “Ocean Drive” and “She’s Got Her Ticket” were on repeat as I closed my eyes sometimes drifting off on my 6 hour flight as I daydreamed of all the possibilities of my new life ahead. Little did I know I was embarking on a journey of a lifetime; one beyond the scope and reach of a plane. One that only life could take me on if I was willing and open to embrace just being present in the little moments that cumulate to a meaningful life; a life worth living. As I reflect upon everything that has brought me to this point, grace and gratitude remain my friends as they remind me of the journey so far and many more moments that lie ahead.

In my pursuit of finding myself, one life lesson that keeps on coming up is the more I think I know, the more I realise I know nothing. Chimamanda Adichie‘s Ted talk titled “The Danger of a Single Story” does a good job of highlighting this. What I know so far about life is from the vantage points I’ve been opportune to encounter, which doesn’t always make it the full story. Perspective is everything and consideration for the view point of others should be given to get a better picture. Bearing this in mind, I continue to seek knowledge while keeping an open mind.

Another life lesson I’ve learnt or should I say one that I was brought up with is staying grounded no matter where you find yourself in life. Sometimes it’s easier to be braggadocious than be centred which is why I make a habit of reflecting on where I once was and how far I’ve come while remembering to recognise myself in others as they too figure out their way on their journey.

Things do not give life to us but rather we give life to things with the way we perceive them and the meaning we attach to them. This is a life lesson that helps me refocus when I lose sight of what’s important in any particular moment.

Gratitude they say is the best attitude and I couldn’t agree more. By taking stock of the good in my life, no matter how insignificant it may sometimes appear, I find myself being even more content with my life despite any troubles I might have. And because I’m aware of the good in my life, it’s harder for external factors to disrupt my joy. Hence why I continue to encourage taking an introspective approach in life.

Practice being present in life’s moments. That’s how beautiful memories are made. This is something I’ve had to consciously work on.

Remember the folks who helped you on your way up and you’ll never lack for good folks in your life. So many lovely people have been wonderful companions on my journey and remain so. I can’t help but be thankful for the role they’ve played in my success thus far. I am indeed grateful for them.

Finally, believe in your dreams enough to act on them. You have to have faith in yourself first before everyone else gets on board. Yes, you might stumble and fall along the way but you’ll learn a lesson or two to help you get to the next point in your life. Remember, the journey remains the most important part of it all.
