I’ve been meaning to tell you about some of the things I’ve gotten up to lately, creatively, but I’ve been very much in a state of rest and mindfulness while trying to navigate the current lockdown. We’re now in March and Spring is nearly upon us. It was around this time last year the first lockdown was announced in the UK and we’ve pretty much remained in it for the most part. This past year has really led to a lot of changes, albeit out of my control at first, but I eventually stopped fighting the change and in many ways embraced it. That’s how I became more in tune with my mind and thoughts. Today marks day 266 of my consistent journalling, and I have since added daily affirmation cards that help set a positive tone for my day. Something a lot of you have also enjoyed me sharing in my Instagram stories as I keep getting asked where the cards are from. Today’s card reads “I am here to enjoy this life”.
Just like the past couple of weeks before this one, the sun is out and the weather very welcoming. As I take a sip of my hot tea while the warmth of the sun hits my skin through light leaks from my window curtains, it feels like the right moment to share my thoughts. Not just in my journal, but on here. March happens to be a month dedicated to women. With International Women’s Day which was yesterday, to Mother’s Day which is this Sunday. And we also have endometriosis awareness all month. Something I’ve suffered from for most of my life so I’m hoping I can use my platform to shed more light on the subject matter.
Yesterday I got to recreate a look of one of my female icons, the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald, and answer some questions as to why I chose her over at Farfetch where you can read all about it. I had so much fun recreating this look as well as getting to know more about Ella since I find myself constantly listening to her music and sometimes using them for my creative projects.
Speaking of creative projects I continue to write music since following the release of my debut single ‘In Your Eyes’. So far it’s gathered well over ten thousand plays across multiple streaming platforms and has been played at least five times on BBC Radio 6 not to mention other radio stations. I could be more thankful and look forward sharing more of my music with you. Still on the subject of creativity, I created a film to share more about my love for flowers which you can watch below. I hope to make many more films and tell the stories of other creative black women through film.
One thing that remains at the centre of my work is to encourage more women to pursue their creative passion. I’ve done so in my own little way by making my presets free as well as providing other free resources and sharing tips and advice in my Coffee Diaries series over on YouTube. Today, I’m able to hire a writer and editor in the person of Chichi Morris to contribute to my blog. Chichi is a longtime friend of mine whom I’ve always enjoyed having thoughtful and meaningful conversations with. She loves to express herself with words and does it beautifully. We met at university back home in Nigeria. Fun fact, our uni was called Madonna University. No affiliation to the “Madonna”, however I do happen to share a birthday with her (16 August) but I digress.
Chichi will be publishing articles under her name on the blog. She’ll be writing about mindfulness, lifestyle, as well as highlighting women who are making a difference in their own little way within their community.
As someone who’s striving to live a balanced and fulfilled life, being able to trust others with work will allow me time to focus and appreciate the little things while allowing them to partake of the abundance I’ve been privileged to experience. Of course I’ll continue to actively share articles under my name as well. I shall be looking to hire more creative women as time goes on. In the meantime, I hope my work inspires you to go after your creative dreams. I appreciate each and every one of your support ♥️
