Everything new in June is a follow up on last month’s series of what’s new in my wardrobe. I figured since I am a lot more than my wardrobe, and I love substance, it is a good opportunity to delve into other aspects of my life that have brought on new thoughts and habits, especially given the conscious self discovery I’ve found myself undertaking in the past couple of months. Something that has brought a lot of clarity to my actions and ultimately my life in general.
Putting my purpose at the centre of things has been very instrumental. You might be wondering, what the hell is she on about? What does she mean by purpose? Well, I’m one of those folks who believes that we’re all here for a reason. To fulfil a certain role in our lifetime, no matter how little it might appear to be. Discovering your purpose stems from asking why. Why do you do the things you do? I’ve been constantly asking myself why for as long as I can remember. But something I picked up very recently from a dear friend of mine was how my purpose should be at the centre of my actions especially ones I feel unsure of. How does this align with your purpose is the question I now seem to pose to myself before acting.
You might be thinking, I wonder what her purpose is. Well, I found that my purpose in life is to empower women – especially less privileged women – to believe in themselves enough to take action to achieve their life goals. Knowing that it might not be easy, but they’ve got everything it will take to achieve it. Keeping that in mind, I’ve made a conscious effort to support even more smaller women led businesses. Something I was already doing was buying from small women owned independent brands on Etsy and Not On The High Street. Thanks to the BLM movement, I’ve since discovered a lot of Black owned brands to now support. This new yellow number is a recent purchase from one of them – Shop A.Au. A very sustainable brand that not only supports women, but also gives back to its community.
This sage green dress is a PR product from Sister Jane. A brand I love for their elegance which has a flare of royalty attached to it. A couple of days ago on my Instagram, I shared how I can be very awkward on first encounter and sometimes find myself tongue-tied in unfamiliar company, which was hindering me especially given my line of work. I went on to say that in other to combat this, I decided to instead dress to express myself in these situations as it turns out, an interesting outfit can be a good conversation starter. Well, this dress would easily form part of my conversation starting outfits.
This pleated floral dress is a PR product as part of a brand collaboration with Label/Mix. And so are the shoes. Their pieces are usually a unique one of a kind which come about through collaboration with independent artists.
Something new I’m doing is journaling everyday. I’ve been keeping journals since I was around 14 years old. But I journaled quite randomly. And it was mostly at night before going to bed if I remembered. But after seeing a 21 day journal challenge, I decided to make an effort at journaling first thing in the morning when I wake up and also last thing before going to bed. I’m currently on day 11 of this process and it feels really gratifying. The morning journaling allows me to put my thoughts and feelings down regardless of what they might be. And the night journaling allows me to let go of my thoughts before bedtime. I find this has allowed me to sleep better.
I am doing a lot more reading these days even though I lack the time to do as much as I would love to. This sees me stay up a little late at night trying to catch up on it. I’ve not long finished “I am not your baby mother” by Candice Brathwaite, which was a really good read, and I’m now on to “Queenie” by Candice Carty-Williams. A book that has had me laughing and feeling all types of emotions while at it.
This lovely maxi skirt is another PR Product from Sister Jane. The blouse happens to be from Sister Jane as well. I purchased it last year during the Black Friday sales and it seems to compliment the skirt really well hence the pairing. And as my love for earthy tones continues, I opted for a lovely brown bag, another PR product from Polene Paris which compliments a lot of pieces in my wardrobe.
