The beauty of an ordinary life is always something I’ve wanted to talk about on here but somehow never got around to doing so. Since spending a lot more time at home, I’ve revisited some personal writing projects which reminded me of this topic.
Now more so than ever, leading an extraordinary life has become something to aspire to. Especially with the age of social media and viral content leading to instant fame. You’ve probably come across the odd motivational quotes that make you feel like you need to be doing more with your life even though you might find yourself perfectly happy with where you are in life.
While an extraordinary life might seem like something to attain, it isn’t a measure of success, at least for everyone. For me, success is being content in your current state. It is possible that the man who looks after his sickly mother is content with his life because he enjoys helping others and his mother’s state has allowed him an avenue to express his love of giving.
There is something comforting about an ordinary life. There’s a lot of stability that accompanies it unlike the extraordinary life which in many cases leads to sacrifices of the little things we might take for granted. Family, friendships and job stability. The latter I know all too well about having quit my steady paying job as an accountant.
Many of my friends lead ordinary lives out of the public eye doing what it is that they do because it brings them all the content they need. Some of them don’t even know what social media is and couldn’t care less about it. Yet they have been able to see and appreciate their own life.
On the other hand I’ve seen folks try everything and anything to achieve someone else’s dreams as oppose to focusing on their own because it isn’t extraordinary enough. But I believe getting to the point of content in one’s self and actions comes with a certain level of maturity which can only be lived and understood.
I’ve since come to realise that the world functions on balance. It is important for us to recognise our differences and accept it. The world needs writers just as much as it needs readers. We can’t all be great athletes and we can’t all be accountants or cleaners. The athlete will need the services of the accountant and the cleaner, while the athlete serves as entertainment for the accountant and the cleaner when they score a touchdown.
So, wherever you find yourself in life, leading an ordinary or not so ordinary life, it is important to discover where your content lies as there you’ll find the beauty in your life.
