THE FILM SERIES “BLACK WOMEN ARE SOFT TOO” FEATURING ONYI MOSS

A FILM SERIES BY ONYI MOSS

“Black Women Are Soft Too” is a film series by Onyi Moss which focuses on the softness in black women that is more often than not amiss in the depiction of black women in the media.

Black women are usually portrayed as being attached to their trauma, and in most instances doesn’t leave room to celebrate their other sides which includes softness.

“Black Women Are Soft Too” aims to change this narrative by highlighting the softness that exists in black women despite any trauma they may have faced.

This will be an ongoing series showcasing black women across the globe with each episode focusing on one black woman resting in softness.

The third episode of “Black Women are Soft Too” features Onyi Moss, who is the creator and film director of this phenomenal production, highlighting the softness black women possess and using film to humanise black women.

Onyi is a singer songwriter, film director, blogger, ardent photographer, content creator and positive influencer who is an avid dreamer. Her work has seen rapid growth as a product of sheer hard work and the injection of a fresh classic-visual-editorial-storytelling approach to the social media scene.

Her style which she describes as “timeless romance” exudes undertones of whimsical softness and elegant grace. Her love for vintage and opulent, fine amaranthine pieces brings a luxurious, enchanting, refined element to her work.

Onyi, who is multitalented, sings like a songbird and her debut single “in your eyes was received by the public with much excitement and received several accolades. The song is an ear worm, it catches on fast and gets one singing the melody in no time.

Her social media page is made up of soul-soothing squares that feature very well thought through sequenced images, which tells a story of a girl so deeply in love with life and all the fine things, embracing the challenges too but living and breathing-in gratitude, whilst forging ahead and gaining grounds.

The third episode featuring Onyi Moss is now live on YouTube.

If you were to scan through the pages of my life, at the very least, you should be able to deduce a sense of softness above all else. Often intertwined with elegance and timeless romance.

You see, I’m a dreamer. And for as long as I can remember, I have always been that way. And not because life was easy, but more so as a result of the absence of ease. A life lesson I was forced to confront as a little girl growing up in Nigeria. I vividly recall the moment this came to be. I was no more than 7. It was a really hot day but I managed to squeeze into my favourite pink dress and a blue straw hat, both of which I had clearly outgrown. But it was my party look and I had a birthday party to attend. Sat in the scorching sun amongst other kids, one by one, adults would stop to pay compliments to certain kids. I was never one of them. It stayed that way throughout the party. It was then it hit me, that I and the other kids who were paid no mind, weren’t the so called standard of beauty. In that moment I knew I would have to work twice as hard to be seen. And thanks to this experience, I made a promise to centre myself. Because I’m the only one who truly sees me.

With that mindset, you could say I made myself the main character. I got into secondary school at the age of 9 and graduated university at 19. And on my 22nd birthday, I moved to the UK alone to begin a whole new life. One which was also lacking in ease. But as you know, I’m no stranger to this.

Now I’m 34 going on 35, and as the years have gone by, I have made a deliberate effort to focus on the things that truly bring joy to my soul. You’ll find me singing sweet melodies and drinking tea while at it. You’ll find me relaying my thoughts in a journal or expressing myself through film. I’m constantly surrounded by the love of family and truly wonderful friends. And I am never without flowers. The point is, you are most certain to find me resting in softness every now and again. And I know many black women who embrace their soft side too. But what I continue to see is that women like me, black women, are often are amiss in the narrative when it comes to softness.

Drawing from my experience, I find storytelling to be the most authentic way to relay a message. I always say, it’s important to tell your story because if you don’t, then someone else might do it for you and you might not like the character they make you out to be. Well here we are, society today doesn’t quite see black women as soft let alone capable of softness. Because we are constantly seen as strong.Yet here I am, and I hope you are too, ready to include us, black women, in the narrative. After all, history they say is written by the victors and from what I see, we’re still standing despite being left out.

Onyi is keen to pay it forward by elevating other women, showcasing their work, amplifying their voices and offering opportunities to share her limelight. This shows her kind spirit and dedication to uplift her community.

To keep up with Onyi’s classic, delicate, timeless-romance depicting work, one that is soothing, invigorating and positive, then stay glued to her instagram, official website, and listen to her debut single ‘in your eyes’.
